President Assad reviews peace development with Qian
Syria, Politics, 12/22/1997
Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Sunday discussed with China's foreign minister, Qian Qichen, a number of regional and international issues and bilateral ties. Discussions concentrated on the Middle East peace process and the obstacles facing this process.
The Chinese minister conveyed his country's stand that peace must be established in the region on the basis of UN resolutions, but that the situation is more complicated. He went on to say that China backs Arab endeavors to establish the peace which restores usurped legitimate Arab rights.
Earlier in the day Syrian Prime Minister al-Zou'bi discussed with Qian trade and economic cooperation between the two countries and means of bolstering them.
In a predeparture statement to SANA (Syrian Arab News Agency), the Chinese minister described his meeting with President Assad as very useful. "We also touched on the bilateral relations between China and Syria which are developing very well in all fields," Qian said.
On the peace process, Qichen said his country follows with great attention the stalemate which the peace process has reached and that China is committed to expressing its opinion before the international community. Concerning his visit to Israel, the Chinese foreign minister said he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and will explain to him China's position.
