GCC for ME peace process promotion
Gulf Region, Politics, 12/19/1997

Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council Sheikh Jamil Hujeilan said the faltering peace process will be one of the most important topics to be debated at the 18th GCC summit to open tomorrow in Kuwait.

In a statement to the Saudi daily al-Riyadh issued today, al-Hujeilan added that the GCC is concerned with the Middle East peace process as from the time it was launched in Madrid on the basis of land for peace and relevant UN resolutions, noting the grave recession in the peace process as a result of Israel's refusal to commit itself to international obligations and respect for UN resolutions.

On the Damascus Declaration, al-Hujeilan described it as a nucleus for a new Arab system in the course of the Arab League on the one hand, and a mechanism for continued consultation between the signatory states, on the other hand.

He welcomed the new Iranian inclination towards the Gulf states, which found positive response in the GCC states, adding that the GCC looks forward to building good neighborliness relations with Iran.
