Qatar, Dubai gas pipeline talks
Qatar-United Arab Emirates, Business, 12/19/1997
A project to supply Dubai with Qatari natural gas through a pipeline is being discussed and is in its final stages, Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Head of Dubai Aviation Directorate and Board Chairman of Emirates Airlines said.
Al-Maktoum said that the project would materialise when prices were agreed upon.
In an interview with Qatar News Agency, he said the pipeline project would supply Dubai with 850 million to one billion cubic feet of Qatari gas a day.
He said the Qatari gas would be used in power generation stations, desalination plants and some other projects.
Al-Maktoum said Dubai's wish to import Qatari gas was based on the understanding and support from Qatari officials at the highest levels, starting from the Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.
Among the encouraging factors were the presence of huge gas reserves in Qatar, the competitive prices offered and Qatar's successful experience in exporting LNG shown by the opening up of Asian markets to Qatari gas, he said. The Qatari government reported.
