Arab states want sanctions on Libya, Sudan, and Iraq off
Libya, Economics, 12/18/1997
At the conclusion of the 8th Arab Parliamentary Conference being held in Libya the heads of the parliamentary delegations condemned all shapes and aspects of terrorism and violence. They reiterated their rejection of all the activities that aim to impair the interests of any country.
They stressed the necessity of supporting all proposals for Arab unity which were submitted during the conference, as they are the only way to protect the security and safety of all countries. They warned against the military alliances in the region with Israel as they threaten the Arab nation.
The final statement of the conference gave its full support to the Libyan people in the Lockerbie crisis. The delegation heads called for holding the trial of the Libyan suspects in a neutral country.
The secretary general of Arab League, Dr.Esmat Abdel Meguid, stated that there are some contacts with the western countries to end the Lockerbie crisis. He also added that the Arab League will try to reactivate the North African Union.
The heads of the participating delegation stated that efforts must be exerted in order to lift the sanctions imposed on Libya, Sudan, and Iraq as the reasons for imposing the sanctions do not conform with international laws. They also called for setting up an Arab economic coalition in the face of international economic and political coalitions.
