Algerian Hamas conference postponed
Algeria, Politics, 12/18/1997
Sources said that the postponement of the Algerian Peaceful Society Movement (Hamas) conference to an indefinite date was due to the numerous differences among those who support and those who oppose the party's current leaders, on top of which is Mahfouz Nehnah.
The supporters believe that the movement should try to strengthen its role among the Algerian authorities, government executives and legislative bodies, while those who oppose Nehnah believe that it should try to strengthen its role within the opposition.
Meanwhile, the Algerian parliament unanimously ratified the public finance draft for the upcoming year after two weeks of heated discussions. For the first time the draft contained scholarships for the daughters of slain policeman. The parliament also ratified increasing the scholarships granted to the widows as well. It also ratified supporting the political parties.
The sessions witnessed modifications in some of the articles of laws submitted to the government which requested doubling taxes on buildings and certain domestic and imported products. The parliament rejected this increase.
The number of modified articles totaled 41.
