Security forces thwart revival of terrorists' activities
Egypt, Local, 12/17/1997
Egyptian security forces thwarted an attempt to revive the activities of the Gamaa Islamya (the Islamic Group) in the northern provinces.
Security forces arrested 10 leaders of the organization in the city of Tanta the capital of the Gharbia province. The 10 leaders were close to the terrorist Mounir Moustafa who was killed three days ago in an exchange of fire with security forces.
The Egyptian security forces also arrested 5 members of the group in Al Mynia province who were very close to the leading terrorist Radi Hamed who was also killed three days ago in a similar exchange of fire.
A source said that the security forces carried out campaigns in Al Gharbia which resulted in the arrest of 10 of the leading members of the Islamic Group. Some important documents about the group's activities and plans were found with them which also contained their plan to revive the activities of the group in the northern provinces starting with Tanta after tight security measures were applied in the southern provinces in the wake of the November 17 attack at a Luxor temple.
The 10 terrorists confessed that Mounir Moustafa had escaped from Asyut to Tanta and succeeded in enlisting new members who later joined the group in a number of the northern provinces.
