Moussa supports Islamic Summit resolutions
Egypt, Politics, 12/16/1997

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa stated that the resolutions of the Islamic Summit had been approved unanimously by the participating countries. He said that those resolutions had been taken in order to safeguard higher Islamic interests and the security of the Islamic world. He also added that Egypt supports those resolutions fully.

Answering reporters, Moussa said that the Islamic Summit was clear in its support of the peace process as it called for abiding by international resolutions and the principle of land for peace. He pointed out that those resolutions are not aimed at one country or one policy in particular, but as a result of the occupation and of thwarting the peace process. These resolutions defend the rights of the Palestinian people as the Islamic world will only accept just and comprehensive peace.

Answering a question regarding the mechanism for putting those resolutions into effect, Moussa said that this is the responsibility of each country and that the resolutions should be respected by all Islamic countries.

Moussa lauded the character of the secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Summit Dr. Ez Al Din Al Iraqi and expressed his hopes that the organization would overcome its financial difficulties.

Moussa submitted a report yesterday to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the results of the meetings of the Islamic Summit and on his contacts and meetings with the leaders, presidents, and kings who participated in the summit, including Iranian President Mohamed Khatemy, Syrian President Hafez Assad, Sudanese President Omar Bashir, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa and the Heir to the Saudi throne, Prince Abdallah Bin Abdel Aziz.

Moussa stressed the Palestinian right to hold a census and criticized the Israeli procedures against the Palestinian attempt. He added that it is natural to hold this census as the Palestinian people comprise a separate society. Opposing this step is opposing a civilized attempt to identify the number of Palestinian people and their needs in addition to identifying the extent of their economic progress.
