Egyptian security investigations into Luxor attack
Egypt, Local, 12/16/1997

Egyptian security bodies continued their interrogations of some of the students at the University of Asyut who are suspected of belonging to the Gamaa Islamiya (Islamic Group).

The interrogations include all the faculties' students in cooperation with the university administration in order to identify the names of those who were absent from lectures during the past period. The security bodies are trying to ascertain the identity of the two unidentified terrorists who had been killed after participating in the Luxor attack.

The dean of the University of Asyut, Mohamed Rafaat, said that the three students who participated in the Luxor attack who were killed had been absent from lectures since the beginning of the year.

He expected that they were enlisted in the city of Qena. He ruled out the possibility that they had been enlisted by the terrorist groups while at the university, as there is a high level of security measures at the university.

The director of the Police Department of Asyut, Gen. Nabil Al Ezabi, called on the people to cooperate with the police in tracking the terrorists and he stressed the necessity of the consolidation of all efforts in order to combat terrorism which aims to cripple the Egyptian economy by discouraging tourists from visiting Egypt.
