UAE parliament starts new session next Sunday
United Arab Emirates, Politics, 12/13/1997

The UAE parliament starts its first new session next Sunday since its formation 6 months ago. The council comprises 40 members representing the seven UAE Emirates.

Earlier the president of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin-Sultan Al-Nahyan, issued a presidential decree for the council to convene in its first session in the 11th legislative chapter.

Sheikh Zayed will deliver a keynote statement marking the council's inauguration in which he'll tackle local Arabs international issues as well as the UAE's regional and international polices.

Electing a new speaker for the council tops the agenda. The council's electorates nominated Al-Haj Bin Abdullah Al-Muhairabi for this post. Al-Muhairabi occupied this post in the 9th and 10th legislative chapters.

UAE sources said that Al-Muhairabi has been playing the role of the united national council speaker over the past 6 months. This was evident in his reception of foreign delegates as well as his participation in public occasions.

According to UAE protocol he kept his title as the council's speaker over that span.

Abu Dhabi (the biggest Emirate) supports Al-Muhairabi as the council's speaker.

He also has the support of the second biggest Emirate for the office.
