Four billion dollar electrical project between Arab countries and Europe
Regional, Economics, 12/11/1997
A European group had allocated $4 billion to finance an electrical connection project between the Arabian networks and Europe in the next two years.
Mohamed Maher Abaza, the Egyptian minister of energy and electricity, stated that the link will be implemented in 3 stages. He indicated that the first stage is being implemented between Morocco and Spain, while the second stage starts next year between Tunisia and Italy, and the third stage will connect to the Arabian net which is implemented between Cairo, Syria, Turkey, and reaches Greece and Italy.
Abaza called on the meeting of energy ministers for the Mediterranean countries in Italy in the middle of next year to study new investments to link other Mediterranean countries and continue current projects.
The electrical connections which transfer power among countries help balance electric loads during low-use times in each country.
European countries depend on the project to get clean, inexpensive energy from Arab states instead of importing raw fuel.
