UN General Assembly urges Israel to withdraw from Golan
Palestine, International, 12/10/1997

The UN General Assembly today demanded Israel's full withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights to the June 4, 1967 border line, resumption of talks on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks from the point at which they stopped, and Israeli respect for and adherence to obligations agreed to in previous talks.

In a new decision adopted unanimously except by the US and Israel concerning the status of the Golan, the GA described the Israeli decision of December 14, 1981 to enforcing its laws and will on the Golan as null and void and of no legal status.

The GA asserted that all items of the Geneva agreement concerning protection of civilians in times of war are still applicable to the Syrian territories occupied by Israel since 1967, noting that Israel's continued occupation and its fait accompli annexation decision of the Golan constitutes a stalemate against achieving just and comprehensive peace in the region.

The GA viewed as illegal Israel's settlement policy in the occupied Golan and expressed satisfaction over convening the Madrid conference on the basis of UN resolutions 242, 338 and 425 and the land for peace formula, demanding that the peace process co-sponsors and the international community spare no efforts for resuming the peace process.

The GA held Israel responsible for obstructing the peace process and voiced support for Syria's stances and her policy which is based on principles of international law.
