Libya calls NATO proposal new colonialism
North Africa Region, Military, 12/10/1997

The proposal which was approved by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) through which NATO will be able to land more than 50,000 soldiers on the North African Mediterranean coast was received with diverse reactions.

Libya confirmed its absolute rejection of the proposal and its refusal to approve of the presence of any foreign forces in the North African countries. It described the proposal as a plan for new colonization.

In Algeria, the Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the proposal. It is believed that Algeria is not concerned with this proposal which mainly aims to carry out an extensive evacuation of foreigners in the North African countries to Spain, France and Italy. Algeria is not included in the evacuation plans as most of the foreigners who were in Algeria left it peacefully before the need for such intervention, after the Islamic Armed Group called on all foreigners to leave Algeria in the fall of 1993.

It should be said that the 16 NATO member countries had met at its Southern Command in Madrid to prepare a strategic charter. The charter included a proposal to land 50,000 soldiers in the North African countries in case of emergency.
