OIC Tehran summit backgroud
Regional, Politics, 12/9/1997

Prior to the 8th Tehran current summit, several meetings were held by experts of OIC member states. Fifty draft bills are approved by concerned committees on many pressing issues connected with the cause of Palestine.

Other issues included ways of enhancing cooperation among member states and solidifying Arab-Islamic cohesion, of protecting common interests and of setting up an Islamic common market.

It should be recalled that occupied Jerusalem has been the preoccupation of all previous OIC summits since the holy city is a symbol of struggle mounted by Moslems and Arabs against the forces of occupation and hegemony.

The first OIC summit was held in Rabat, Morocco in 1969 after the Zionists burnt al-Aqsa mosque with the objective of destroying this sacred place, of imposing occupation as a fait accompli condition and of judaizing Arab Jerusalem.

The second summit was held in Lahour, Pakistan in 1974 in the aftermath of the October War when Islamic solidarity voiced all-out support for the Arabs in their struggle with Israel. Other OIC summits were successively held in Taif, Saudi Arabia in 1981, Casablanca, Morocco in 1984, Kuwait in 1987, Dakar, Senegal in 1991, and Casablanca again in 1994.

All summits dealt with regional and international questions as well as issues of common concern.
