Tunisia modifies election laws
Tunisia, Politics, 12/9/1997

The Tunisian Cabinet of Ministers chaired by Tunisian President Zein Al Abin Bin Ali approved extensive modifications to the election laws, aimed at increasing the number of seats allocated to the opposition in the specialized councils.

By virtue of this law and after the parliament approves these modifications, the number of seats allocated to the opposition in the parliament will increase from around 12% to 20%. The remaining 80% will be allocated to candidates from the other lists. The election modifications also aim to increase the number of parties in Tunisia and the participation of young people by ensuring equality between female and male voters in all rights.

Informed sources stated that the number of seats of the parliament will increase in the upcoming election as there will be one seat for each 50,000 voters instead of 60,000 voters as before.

The modifications also included reducing the minimum age of the candidates in the parliamentary election from 25 to 23 years old and expanding the eligibility of voting to the Tunisian citizens who have foreign fathers and Tunisian mothers.

The upcoming legislative election in Tunisia will be held in 1999 while the municipal elections will be held in the year 2000.
