Agreement to form Islamic committee on Lockerbie crisis
Regional, Politics, 12/6/1997

The Seven-member Committee, consisting of members from the North African countries, Syria and Egypt, decided to put the Lockerbie crisis on the agenda of the meetings of the Foreign Ministers held during the Islamic conference in Tehran today. The committee called for the formation of an Islamic Committee to follow up the developments in the crisis, which would be similar to Arab and African committees in this concern.

The Arab Ambassadors had agreed on the Egyptian proposal to form an Islamic Committee and to hold a meeting of the Seven-member Committee during the Islamic summit in Tehran.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Dr. Esmat Abdel Meguid, had sent a message to the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference Ez Al Din Al Iraqi in which the former requested that the Lockerbie crisis be included on the agenda of the Foreign Ministers' meetings.

Libya's envoy to the Arab League, Salma Rashed, confirmed that the Seven-member Committee studied the results of the efforts exerted since last May to solve the Lockerbie crisis, and the results of the South African President's visit to Libya.

She said that there is a progress on the British stance which was clear during the visit of the British Foreign Minister Robin Cook as he suggested that representatives from the Arab League and the UN can attend the trials to be sure of the procedures. Rashid also welcomed the UN delegation's visit to Libya which aims to identify the damages incurred by the sanctions which have been imposed on Libya since 1992.
