Sudan welcomes Egyptian mediation to solve crisis in the South
Sudan-Egypt, Politics, 12/6/1997

The Sudanese Parliament's speaker, Dr. Hassan Al Torabi, stated that Sudan informed Egypt that it welcomes the Egyptian and Arab mediation to solve the crisis in the Sudanese South. He expressed his confidence that Egypt will not accept the separation of the South.

Al Torabi added that the government delegation that visited Egypt recently, headed by the Sudanese Deputy President Al Zobir Mohamed Saleh, informed Egypt that Sudan welcomes Egyptian and Arab efforts because Sudan had accepted the mediation of other countries before.

As for the Garang's proposal to form a Sudanese confederation that consists of two separate parts, Saleh confirmed that Egypt has strategic interests in Sudan and that Sudan is sure that it will never allow the separation of the South because this has to do with the issues of water and security.
