Egyptian opposition party refuses to meet John Garang
Sudan-Egypt, Politics, 12/6/1997

The Opposition Egyptian Labor Party refused to meet with the leader of the Sudanese Movement for the Liberation of Sudan, John Garang, and said it considers Garang's visit to Cairo as meaningless. Meanwhile leading figures of the Leftist Tagamoua Party and Al Wafd Party expressed their confidence that Garang is not trying to divide Sudan.

The Leader of the Labor Party, Ibrahim Shoukry, said that no discussion will lead to achieving stability in Sudan and described Garang's statements in Cairo on the unity of Sudan as ignoring many important issues.

Shoukry said that vagueness and doubts enshroud the institutions that provide Garang with arms and money and that the US offers military training and arms to Garang's movement.

Shoukry expressed his wonder at Garang's presence in Cairo, and for giving him prominant exposure.

Garang had met with the Wafd and Tagamoua Parties, and he rejected the idea that he had visited Israel or received any arms from it.
