Lybian - French problem to end?
Libya, Politics, 12/6/1997

After 8 years of investigations in the case of the explosion of the French UTA plane, and after the case was referred to the French government in order to arrest the convicted Libyan citizens, the case is still not closed with regard to the arrest of 6 Libyan citizens who are involved in that explosion. Four international orders have been issued to arrest the convicted Libyan citizens.

At the request of France, the UN Security Council issued on January 21, 1992 resolution No. 721/92 which openly stated the French request for the Libyan authorities to cooperate with French authorities in the investigation of the UTA plane explosion. Libya rejected this resolution, which caused the Security Council to pass resolutions No. 748 and 883 by virtue of which sanctions were imposed on Libya.

In March 1996, the Libyan Leader Moammar Gadaffi sent a message to the French President in which he confirmed Libya's readiness for full cooperation in this case. French Judge Jean Le Brogir went to Libya for investigation after which he said that he stayed in Tripoli for two days, July 5-6, 1996, with an investigation team. He declared that he found full cooperation from the concerned Libyan authorities and managed to collect the relevant information. It only remains for Libya to hand over the convicted Libyans.
