Sudanese women whipped and fined

The Sudanese authorities carried out sentences of whipping and fines against 37 women who had protested against the government's decision to move students who are performing obligatory military service to military camps in South to fight against the rebels.
The secretary general of the Democratic National Gathering, Al Sayed Mubarak Al Mahdi, stated that the trial lasted for four hours in during the Sudanese women were indicted for causing public unrest and organizing anti-government marches. The convicted women included leaders of the Opposition Women's Gathering.
He added that Judge Mohamed Ser Al Khatam Garabawy sentenced each of the 37 women to 10 lashes and a fine of 25,000 Sudanese pounds.
Among the convicted women is one of the leaders of the Opposition Uma Party Sara Nakd Alla, one of the leaders of the Communist Party Soad Ibrahim Ahmed, the widow of the late leader of the Communist Party Abdel Khalik Mahgoub who was executed during the rule of the former Sudanese President Gaafer Nomery in addition of a number of female lawyers belonging to the opposition.
ArabicNews.com was informed that hundreds of women participated in a demonstration and submitted a protest memorandum to the UN's representative in Khartoum, but when they were heading to the premises of the cabinet for the same purpose, they were stopped by the police.
