Egypt - Tunisia trade up to $300 million

Preparations are underway to increase the volume of the trade between Egypt and Tunisia to about $300 million and to increase Egyptian exports to Tunisia especially, petrochemicals, phosphates, tourist appliances, furniture and sanitary devices.

The measures aim to strengthen foreign trade relations between the two countries through facilitating the movement of exports via land and sea. These measures come within the decisions of the Egyptian-Tunisian Higher Committee which was chaired by the two presidents in its recent meeting.

Egyptian Minister of Supply Ahmed Goweili stressed the importance of expanding export markets and the exchange of commodities and expertise between the two countries. He added that these procedures aim to increase the volume of trade exchange next year to $300 million compared to $200 million in the current year and compared to $100 million in 1996. It also aims to raise this volume to $1 billion by the year 2000.

The Egyptian Minister added that the two countries will try to adopt the measures necessary to increase the number of tax free commodities within the plan for gradual liberalization of taxes between the two countries.
