Gadaffi receives a message from French president
Libya, Politics, 12/5/1997

Diplomatic sources in Libya confirmed that Libyan President Moammar Gadaffi received a message from the French President Jacques Chirac which was delivered by the director of the Arab World Institute, Kamil Kabana. Kabana is currently visiting Libya within his tour of some of the countries in Arab region.

The Libyan President had described Libyan-French relations as excellent and expressed his readiness to fully cooperate in the investigation carried out by Paris in the explosion of the French Uta plane over Niger which killed more than 170 persons in 1989.

On November 24, the French government had also delivered to the UN Security Council a fact-finding report submitted by French Judge Jean Le Gier on the results of his investigation of the explosion.

In Cairo, the Arab League had received a message from the UN Secretary-General Koffi Annan in which the latter informed the Arab League that a UN delegation will head to Tripoli soon to hold discussions with Libyan officials on the Lockerbie crisis. This crisis has led the Security Council to impose tough sanctions on Libya since 1992.

Sources disclosed to ArabicNews.com that the UN's decision to send a delegation to Libya came in response to a proposal submitted by Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Esmat Abdel Meguid to Annan last June. The Arab League is supporting Libya in its refusal to hand over two Libyan citizens charged by the US and Britain of bombing a Pan America flight over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988.
