Organization for African Unity arranges reconciliation conference for Comoros
Comoros, Politics, 12/4/1997

The Organization for African Unity announced that a reconciliation conference between the Comoran government and secessionists will be held in Addis Ababa from December 10 - 13.

This conference was supposed to be the held during last September yet it was postponed due to the military attempt by government forces to retake Anjouan Island, which announced its independence from Comoros Islands last August.

Thus, the conference failed due to the dissenters' resistance who arrested a huge number of captives from Comoros Island's soldiers since the time.

The OAU declared that all parties were invited to participate in the Addis Ababa conference. From the beginning the organization showed great concern for the Comoros Islands' territorial integrity and urged the secessionists to reunite with Comoros.

Last month the OAU sent a team of military observers to assess the situation in the islands.
