Egyptian opposition raises issue of captives killed in Israel
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 12/4/1997

The Egyptian opposition has recently raised the issue of Egyptian captives who were killed in Israel in previous wars between the two countries.

An opposition deputy accused the Egyptian government of ignoring material and spiritual rights for the soldiers and civilians who were executed by Israeli defense forces in the Suez attacks in 1956 and 1967.

In his interrogation of Prime Minister Dr. Kamal El-Ganzouri, opposition deputy El Sayed El-Badry Farghdy said that the government neglected to investigate the murderers according to international conventions that condemn killing civilians in occupied territories and prisoners of war.

Egyptian opposition sources said, "The interrogation is a new step among several procedures the opposition intends to take up in discussing Israeli - Egyptian relations, in light of the current developments in the region" -- among which is the Israeli pressure on Egypt to release convicted Israeli spy Azam Azam.

The interrogation stated that Israel obtains billion of dollars annually as a compensation for the Jews killed by the Nazis during World War II, implying the need for similar compensation to the Egyptians.
