Spanish investigation in Sebta
Morocco, Politics, 12/4/1997
A Spanish Parliamentary delegation is currently visiting the northern Morocco city of Sebta, which is occupied by Spain. The visit aims to investigate the living conditions of illegal immigrants who live under difficult political conditions in camps and refugee reception centers.
Spanish sources confirmed that the delegation is interested in gathering information about 500 immigrants of African and Moroccan origin who protested against their living conditions and the fact that they were not allowed to obtain the documents necessary to travel to Spain and Europe.
The city of Milila, overlooking the Mediterranean, witnessed similar protests after the illegal immigrants of Algerian origin went on a hunger strike in order to attract attention to their living conditions and to have their problems addressed by the authorities.
Many other African groups had gone on similar strikes and protests, especially after Spain signed many agreements with Morocco to stop the illegal immigration and to deport those who immigrated illegally through Morocco.
Relations between Rabat and Madrid were recently shaken as a result of the eruption of Moroccan protests against the 500th anniversary of the Spanish occupation of the two cities.
