Sudanese governor calls for stopping deterioration of external relations
Sudan, Politics, 12/3/1997
The governor of the Sudanese province of Darfur, Dr. Abdel Nabi Aly Hakim, stated that the deteriorating security situation is due to a number of factors: mainly the instability of the regimes in neighboring countries and the availability of arms at cheap prices in addition to tribal disputes. He also stressed the absence of education and health services.
The governor criticized the way in which the Comprehensive Security Conference of Darfur was prepared, as it prevented many of the people's and political leaders from participating. The Sudanese official called on giving all the Sudanese the chance to participate in a comprehensive conference to discuss Sudan's political problems.
He also called on Sudanese leaders to exert their efforts to stop the deterioration of Sudan's external relations with its neighboring countries and with international organizations. Dr. Al Hakim said he hoped that a peaceful solution could be reached for the problem of the South.
