John Garang confirms adherence to Sudan unity
Sudan, Politics, 12/3/1997
The leader of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Sudan, Dr. John Garang, confirmed that he will adhere to maintaining the unity of Sudan and to the decisions of Asmara Conference. He added that the strategic agreement to which the movement is committed is the one signed in Asmara.
He clarified that the probability that the conventional means could topple the Sudanese regime is weak. He called for adopting new means and mechanisms in this concern.
Garang explained the conditions that pushed the movement to request autonomy and confederation. He added that the discussions held in Nairobi failed and that he still adheres to the decisions of the Asmara Agreement.
Garang said that unity should be based on facts, and that the means of maintaining unity is the real issue. He wondered that although some are worried about the confederation, this issue was discussed before in Abioga in 1993. This proposed confederation would not endanger the unity of Sudan and it would not lead to separation, he said.
Garang told reporters his movements was committed to peace in Sudan but could not accept a theocratic state as envisioned by Khartoum's Islamic leaders, Al Khartoum said today.
"The government of Sudan has a fixed mind. They insist on division of the Sudan which is based on extremism, in terms of a theocratic agenda and that is a major block," he said.
Garang arrived in Egypt last week on his first visit since Sudan's Islamist rulers took over in a bloodless coup in 1989.
