Amr Moussa pays an urgent visit to Saudi Arabia
Gulf Region, Politics, 12/2/1997
The Egyptian Foreign Minister paid Saudi Arabia a quick, undeclared visit that would last for a number of hours during which he is going to meet with his Saudi counterpart Prince Saud Al Faisal within the efforts exerted by Saudi Arabia during the past two days to contain the deterioration in the Egyptian-Qatari relations.
Before leaving, Moussa met with President Mubarak who instructed him to fly to Saudi Arabia in response to a request from King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz, the Custodian of the Two Holy Shrines, which was delivered by Saudi Minister of State Abdel Aziz Al Khoayatar.
Diplomatic sources believed that Amr Moussa will meet with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jabir Al Thani, in Riyadh and that the meeting will be attended by Prince Saud Al Faisal in order to put an end to the deterioration of the Egyptian-Qatari relations and to stop the hostile press campaigns in the two countries in preparation for a meeting between President Mubarak and Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa of Qatar.
A war of words had erupted between Qatar and Egypt after the end of the Middle East-North Africa Conference that was held in Qatar, due to Egypt's refusal to attend the conference as a result of the deadlock in the peace process between Israel and the Arab countries.
Sources also confirmed that the Egyptian Foreign Minister will discuss with his Saudi counterpart the agenda of the 8th Summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference due to be held in Tehran next week. The two officials will also discuss boosting the work of the Joint Saudi-Egyptian Committee in order to vary and strengthen the relations of the two countries and to increase the volume of the trade exchange.
