High-ranking Egyptian police officials referred for trial
Egypt, Local, 12/2/1997
The Egyptian government is trying to contain the consequences of the Luxor terrorist attack, as the Interior Minister Habib Al Adly issued a decree to refer 6 high-ranking police officials to trial.
Investigations run by the deputy of the Minister of Interior and the director of the Monitoring and Inspection Department at the Ministry of Interior revealed that there has been negligence in securing the tourists which led to the high number of victims.
A security source at the Ministry of Interior informed ArabicNews.com that the 6 officers are the director of the Luxor Police Department Gen. Medhat El Shanawany, his deputy Gen. Abu El Atta Youssef Abu El Atta, Col. Amr Ahmed Agouz, Major Sherif Gamal Thabet, Lieutenant Sherif Afifi and Lieutenant Ibrahim Mohamed El Saadi.
The 6 officers are charged with negligence for not taking the necessary security precautions to protect tourist areas, slackness in moving to the scene of the crime after the attack, in addition to negligence for not providing their forces with enough arms to protect the tourist groups and for not inspecting the security checkpoints near the scene.
On the other hand, the Public Attorney of Qena province, Chancellor Ahmed Abdul Rahman, received yesterday the forensic reports on the 6 bodies of the terrorists and the police reports on the kind of arms and bullets found with the terrorists. Those reports revealed that the terrorists had been together for at least 3 days before the attack as the remnants of the food found in their stomach was the same.
