Waldhiem calls for Arab-Israeli conflict settlement
Regional, Politics, 12/2/1997

Former UN Secretary General Dr. Kurt Waldheim has warned against the consequences of freezing the Middle East peace process, adding that Arab-Israeli conflict, which has been raging for years without reaching a solution, has intensified tension and escalated instability not only in the Middle East region but at the international level.

In a statement to ArabScope, Waldheim stressed the need to implement UN resolutions, especially 242, 338 and 425 concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict, in order to establish just and comprehensive peace in this vital part of the world.

He said he regretted that the current Israeli government acts as if it is not obliged to adhere to what has been agreed upon, noting that Israel has many times violated or gone back on several accords signed with the Palestinians.

Waldhiem urged the international community to seriously work for a peaceful solution to the Middle East question within the framework of international resolutions.

He continued to say that the Middle East crisis is so crucial it requires the mobilization of efforts of all states and governments concerned to take part in finding a solution. He underlined the importance of revitalizing the role of the UN especially in light of increased world interest in issues of economic growth, human rights, the environment, and fighting of international crimes and drug- trafficking.

He indicated that Israel's Mossad was behind the campaign aimed at defaming him through the accusation he was recruited by the Nazi army, adding that a former Mossad agent, Victor Astroviski, had published a book two years ago in which he admitted his personal participation as an agent for Mossad in falsifying Waldheim's personal file at the UN headquarters with forged documents
