Continued Israeli aggressions against Lebanon
Lebanon, Military, 12/1/1997
Israeli occupation forces continued acts of aggression against south Lebanon over the weekend. Lebanese security sources said that Israeli artillery batteries shelled al-Tuffah district, and that the bombardment was accompanied by heavy machine gun fire.
Meanwhile, Lebanese resistance men attacked with rockets an agents' patrol driving on Kafr Houne Aramti road, a statement released by the resistance front said.
Earlier on Sunday, Israeli occupation troops bombarded a number of towns and villages in South Lebanon. Lebanese security sources said shelling hit Zebdin, Majdal Zon, Kafra, Yater, Hadatha and neighboring valleys.
The occupation troops also carried out mopping-up operations using heavy machine guns in the western Bekaa.
Meanwhile the Lebanese resistance on Saturday killed three Israeli-allied militiamen and injured five Israeli soldiers in bomb attacks in south Lebanon, security sources said.
Israeli fighter jets retaliated by bombing Hizbullah bases in the south, causing no casualties.
The sources said the five Israeli soldiers were wounded early Saturday when a roadside bomb planted by resistance guerrillas went off as they were driving on a road in the border zone Israel occupies. Some 1,200 Israeli troops along with 2,500 of their Lebanese militia allies from the South Lebanon Army patrol the zone.
Security sources said the five suffered moderate injuries and were taken by military helicopter to a hospital in Israel.
Another roadside bombing near the SLA-controlled town of Jezzine late Saturday killed three militiamen. Hizbullah issued a statement claiming its responsibility for both attacks.
Few hours later, Israeli warplanes raided Hizbullah positions in the village of Joun, outside the occupied zone. Sources reported no casualties from the air attack.
At least 37 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 80 others wounded in south Lebanon this year, the highest loss for Isreal since it established the security zone in 1985.
