Exporting Egyptian gas to Europe through Libya
Egypt-Libya, Business, 12/1/1997
Technical studies are underway to set up a pipeline which will transfer Egyptian natural gas to world markets through Libya. This pipeline comes amid new discoveries of natural gas wells and many new projects carried out through international investments all over Egypt.
Egyptian Minister of Oil Hamdi Al Banbi stressed the fact that a great portion of the Egyptian natural gas will be exported to the international markets through the Libyan pipelines which are connected to the gas network of the north African countries, which in turn is connected with the network of the countries in south Europe, foremost of which are Italy and Spain. He added that Egypt can export its gas to the east through Jordan and to the west through Libya. It can also export the gas in its liquefied state in tankers.
The Egyptian minister of oil also confirmed that these agreements with Jordan and Libya have been signed. The companies working in the natural gas field in Egypt are mainly from the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, UK, and Spain.
Al Banbi clarified that 4 "gas" stations were inaugurated to serve natural gas-burning cars on the highway between Egypt and Libya. L.E. 260 million was allocated to set up 125 service stations, rest stations, and motels on the coastal and desert roads between Egypt and Libya. The number of stations on these roads is expected to reach 50 by the end of the upcoming year.
