27 heads of state and 3 kings to attend Islamic Summit
Regional-Iran, Politics, 12/1/1997

It is confirmed that 27 heads of state, 3 kings, 3 heirs to the throne, 7 premiers and 4 deputy heads of state will participate in the Islamic Summit, due to be held in Tehran on December 9-12.

Algeria's level of participation is not yet clear, whether it will participate with its ambassador or with a higher level. Tehran was not officially informed of the Algerian position.

Most of the Arab countries will participate with their heads of state except for Iraq, which will be represented by Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan, and Egypt, which will be represented by its Foreign Minister, Amr Moussa, in spite of the expectations of some observers that Egypt would send its Premier Kamal El Ganzouri.

The summit's coordinator, Sadek Al Kherazy, stated that invitations were sent to some world leaders and dignitaries to attend the Summit, including to UN Secretary General Koffi Annan, the Arab League's Secretary General Esmat Abdel Meguid, the Deputy Chairman of the Non-Alignment Movement in addition to leaders of different Afghani factions, although the official seat of Afghanistan will remain vacant. He added that he does not know whether the leaders of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in Palestine were invited or not.
