Israel criticizes Clinton: We will not submit to U.S will
Israel, Politics, 11/27/1997

Israel's Sciences Minister Mikhael Etan has criticized United States President Bill Clinton. President Clinton had refused to meet with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.

During an interview by the Hebrew-language Israeli army radio Etan said,"The claim of not having enough time for President Clinton to meet with Netanyahu is but a lie, and an indication of a new level of US dealing with the Premier Netanyahu. Etan added that Israel will not kneel nor submit to the will of the U.S when the U.S exerts pressure on Israel.

Etan described these pressures as null and void. He was concerned that President Clinton could find time to meet with Shimon Peres and Rabin's widow for several hours but could not find time to meet Netanyahu.

Meantime, former Israeli ambassador to the U.S, Zalman Shoufal, said, "The U.S commits a deadly mistake when the U.S assumes pressure on Israel will be useful. During an interview with the same Israeli radio station Shoufal claimed that U.S pressure would lead to new obstacles, hindering peace. He added such American pressure would consolidate the Arab stand."

Sources say there are indications that the US is reassessing its tactics in resolving the outstanding problems between Israel and Palestine.
