Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike
Palestine, Local, 11/24/1997
Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have started a campaign of solidarity with Itaf Elayan, a Palestinian woman currently being held by Israel for alleged membership in the Islamic Jihad organization.
Elayan has been on a hunger strike for 32 days and she recently even decided to stop drinking water. She insists that Israel had no reason to arrest her and that her detention is part of settling accounts with her.
Elyan had been in prison before and was released last year along with all Palestinian women in part of Israel's commitment in the Oslo Accords to the release of all Palestinian prisoners. So far, there are some 4,000 Palestinian inmates waiting for their release from Israeli jails.
