Mubarak opens Nubian Museum
Egypt, History, 11/24/1997

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak and Mrs. Suzan Mubarak arrived last Saturday night in Aswan where they opened the new Nubian Museum yesterday.

The president headed a host of world personalities and Egyptian officials at the opening of the Museum, which was built in cooperation with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

After the inauguration, Egypt's leader watched a documentary film on the UNESCO-sponsored efforts to protect the Nubian monuments which had been endangered by the Nile floods caused by Aswan high dam.

The museum has put on display around 2,000 rare pieces illustrating the development of Nubia through the pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic eras.

The president and his guests attended a Nubian folk dance performance last night at an open-air stage built in the Museum's garden, Al Ahram daily said today.
