Azerbaijan to supply Lebanon with oil
Lebanon, Politics, 11/21/1997

Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Hassan Hassanov said during a brief visit here that his country would be ready to supply Lebanon with oil from the Caspian sea within a couple of years.

Hassanov on Thursday met with his Lebanese counterpart Fares Boueiz as well as with Prime Minister Rafik Hariri to discuss the oil deal, in addition to the development of political and economic bilateral ties.

"When Lebanon's capital and Azerbaijan's natural resources are brought together, joint profits will be achieved," Hassanov said.

He added a pipeline from Azerbaijan to Turkey would start functioning in two years time and would provide Lebanon with Caspian oil at a low cost.

"We think that Lebanon will be able to get the required amounts of oil to satisfy its needs," Hassanov said.

The two sides also discussed draft cooperation agreements on double taxation, encouraging investments and air links to be signed in the future.

"We discussed the development of economic ties between Azerbaijan and Lebanon and we agreed on the need to sign a number of economic agreements," Hassanov said following the meeting with Hariri.

In his meeting with Boueiz, Hassanov focused on boosting bilateral relations and developments in the region. Following the meeting Boueiz said that talks dealt with the two countries' areas of interests to serve mutual benefits.

He said that he explained to the visiting delegation developments in the Middle East peace process and Israel's occupation of the South. "We have agreed to continue talks towards developing a new vision for bilateral future cooperation," Boueiz commented.

For his part, the Azeri minister noted the existing potential to develop economic relations between the two countries. "We shared identical views on the need to settle disputes in the Middle East and the Caspian Sea area through peaceful means," the Azeri minister said.
