Aziz meets with AL secretary-general
Iraq, Politics, 11/21/1997
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz confirmed that Russia is interested in the Iraqi situation, namely in the necessity of a comprehensive revision of the constitution of the UN weapons inspection teams so that they are balanced, yet Russia didn't promise anything specific.
Aziz pointed out the existence of positive stances in the Security Council from some countries as France, China and Egypt.
Aziz met for two hours with Dr. Esmat Abdel Meguid, the secretary-general of the Arab League, during which they discussed the causes of the crisis, due to which Iraq made a decision to expel the American inspectors. Of the agreement concluded in Moscow between Iraq and Russia, Aziz said Iraq is looking forward to the Arab League's support for Iraqi demands, which are legal, balanced and in compliance with international rules.
Aziz said in a press conference after his meeting with the secretary general of the Arab League, Dr. Esmat Abdel Meguid, that Russia promised through this agreement to hasten the lifting of the sanctions on Iraq and confirm at the special committee Iraq's sovereignty.
