The failure of coordination between the 6 parties in Algeria
Algeria, Politics, 11/18/1997

Amid the development of continuous differences between the 6 parties in Algeria which are organizing a protest against the local elections which were conducted on October 23, El Nahda party announced the failure to find common ground between the 6 parties.

El Tagamoo party announced its withdrawal from Protest Front for Culture and Democracy, saying that withdrawal is due to the decision of some parties to not adhere to the agreed upon commitments.

Other differences were cited concerning the path the parties had to follow in order to challenge to the authorities' persistence in eliminating the protest movement.

The Labor Party who won few seats supported complete withdrawal from the local councils. The Communist Forces Front also announced that it is still stagnating the activities of its elected member in the local councils.

It also called El-Nahda movement to keep communication channels open in order to find new common ground.

Meanwhile the Algerian authorities have strongly confronted protest marches led by the opposing parties. The Algerian authorities prevented demonstrations on last Thursday and caused the failure of the general strike through what the parties described as terrorizing laborers and merchants. The authorities also prevented student demonstrations and strikes in the parties' headquarters and in the countryside.
