The Army in the Bekaa
Lebanon, Politics, 11/15/1997
Army soldiers deployed, this morning, in the Baalbek-Hermel area, at the cabinet's demand, in an attempt to shut down Sheikh Sobhi Toufeili's "Hunger revolution."
The installation of permanent checkpoints and reconnaissance squads was accompanied by the army command's announcement which forbids inhabitants of the area to gather, protest and block roads.
It also requested that all unlicensed TV and radio stations cease broadcasting. Toufeili has an operating unlicensed radio station he refuses to shut down. The army will stay in the Bekaa for three months.
