Extensive Iraqi-Jordanian cooperation in upcoming months
Jordan-Iraq, Economics, 11/15/1997
The head of the Jordanian Chamber of Industry, Khaldon Abu Hassan, stated that the visit of the Jordanian economic mission to Baghdad achieved good results. The economic and industrial cooperation between the two countries was discussed during the meeting headed by Jordanian Minister of Agriculture and the Iraqi Ministers of Trade, Industry, Finance and Agriculture in Baghdad.
He also added that the Jordanian-Iraqi Committee discussed the fields of cooperation between the two countries and means of coordinating the two countries' stances on the Arab and international levels.
Abu Hassan confirmed that the volume of the trade exchange between Jordan and Iraq exceeded $1 billion, including the Jordanian oil imports from Iraq. The Jordanian exports to Iraq exceeded $750 million through the current year.
Jordan has been a gateway for commerce to Iraq ever since the UN imposed sanctions on Iraq as a result of the Guld war. There is new competition to Jordan in this regard since Syria opened its borders with Iraq and began improving its political and commercial ties. The volume of trade shifting to the Syrian border is increasing gradually.
