Algeria denies involvement of government forces in massacres
Algeria, Politics, 11/14/1997

The Algerian authorities denied allegations in some of the European press reports that government security forces are involved in the horrendous massacres against civilians in Algeria. The authorities also denied the involvement of the Algerian army in the bomb attacks in the French capital in 1995.

Algerian government spokesman Habib Shawky described what was said by the British and French press in this concern as press propaganda which aims to defame Algeria.

Shawky defended the Algerian army and confirmed that the army has always done its duties through defending Algeria and maintaining its national security. Many members of this army sacrificed their lives for the sake of Algeria and there is no proof for these accusations. He also described these accusations as silly, dangerous, and baseless. Shawky confessed the existence of some negligence which cannot be on purpose.

A former agent in the Algerian Intelligence Service, Youssef Khaled, had ran away and applied for political asylum in Britain. Khaled accused the Algerian regime and its intelligence of being involved in hideous massacres against the Algerian civilians. He also said that the Algerian authorities hide information about Iraqi nuclear, chemical, and biological programs.
