Morocco, Politics, 11/13/1997
A district in Rabat witnessed confrontation between two competing nominees, which led to police intervention to disperse the people who closed the road. No one was reported injured in this confrontation.
Sources in the opposition Independence Party stated that the Moroccan authorities arrested supporters of the Front Party in the city of Araish north of Morocco as they were distributing leaflets calling on the people to boycott the election. Those supporters are believed to have been referred to the prosecution for more investigation. Similar incidents occurred in other areas as well. The Moroccan authorities stated that these incidents aim to undermine national stability.
The Pioneering Party boycotted the election while most of other parties are participating in the election in addition to the small parties.
