Morocco ready for elections - opposition excited
Morocco, Politics, 11/13/1997
For the first time in decades, opposition leaders in the Union Party are preparing themselves to move from their opposition seats to the government seats.
Mohamed Al Baz confirmed that the opposition parties are ready to take over the government, which is determined by the Moroccan Monarch according to the constitution. The opposition parties say that the exchange of the government between the left and right wings will greatly benefit the country and will give it great strength in the future.
During the election campaigns, the Union Party had complained about money being used to buy votes, an issue which is still in the air, though the authorities stated that they would adopt tough measures to end it.
Members of the Union party are afraid of the fact that money could harm the final results of the election, because the battle is very difficult in spite of the existence of a strong popular support for the change. The Socialist Union will run this election with individual nominees just like the other parties of the Democratic Coalition which are the Party of Independence, the Party of Advancement and Socialism, and the Labor Organization.
