Copts tell US to butt out of Egypt's internal affairs
Egypt, Politics, 11/12/1997
The Copts of Egypt confirmed their rejection of all kinds of American intervention in the internal affairs of Egypt under the pretext of defending the rights of the Copts of Egypt.
Many voices had been heard in the US Congress calling for the US intervention in Egypt to protect the Copts under the pretext that they are subjected to coercion because of their religious beliefs.
The statement, which was signed by a number the prominent Copts and the Muslim and Christian intelligentsia, warned against the fact that the excuses proclaimed by the US defame Egypt and the national history of the Copts in addition to rousing the sectarian feelings which would affect the historic relations between the Muslims and the Copts in Egypt.
The statement criticized US attempts to intervene in the internal affairs of Egypt and to stop the US aids and grants to Egypt. It pointed out that since the dawn of history Egypt's Copts have confronted all dangers besieging Egypt and that they understood all the attempts in which religion was used to attack them. The stance of the Copts is the outcome of the historical, social, and political developments which stress the unity of all the citizens of Egypt.
