Peaceful Society Movement refuses to sign election monitoring report
Algeria, Politics, 11/8/1997
Within the events in the Algerian political arena which are described by politicians as a step to calm down the Algerian opposition, the judicial council continued its announcements of the results of the petitions submitted by the opposition parties. The results changed the number of seats won by each party in the recent election to the benefit of the opposition parties.
The latest results announced by the judicial councils came out in favor of the National Liberation Front Party and against the party of President Zeroual, which lost 43 seats. The total number of seats lost by President Zeroual's party through last Thursday was 200. That number is expected to increase before the end of the current week when the final results of the petitions will be announced.
Within the insistence of the opposition parties on their stance toward the election, the Peaceful Society Movement (Hamas) refused to sign the final report of the national committee which was responsible for monitoring the election. The report is due to be submitted to President Zeroual today.
