Arab League criticizes US sanctions against Sudan
Sudan, Economics, 11/8/1997
The Arab League criticized the US trade embargo imposed on Sudan, saying it harms the Sudanese people. The head of the Arab Department, Ambassador Ahmed Bin Haly, stated that the method of imposing economic sanctions on countries has become unacceptable because of international relationships and contradicts the new beliefs which the world has recently adopted.
He said that experience shows that such sanctions harm the people before they harm the ruling regime. He stressed that this does not mean abandoning international responsibility of combating terrorism in all its forms.
He added that terrorism has become a disease that should be surrounded and exterminated. He encouraged all countries to respond to the initiative of holding an international conference for combating terrorism. He called on the big powers not to host the members of the terrorist groups who live in these countries under the pretext of political asylum and to defend human rights.
The embargo against Sudan will expand the boundaries of sanctions imposed on Sudan many years ago. Sudanese possessions in the USA were frozen as a result of this embargo.
