American cows reach Lebanon
Lebanon, Agriculture, 11/7/1997
The first batch of American cows reached the Port of Beirut which includes 750 cows, the remaining 2,250 cows will be sent later. The Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture had bought these cows through a loan offered by the US Department of Agriculture.
The cows will be sold to farmers who will pay 20% of the price immediately, and the rest of the price will be paid over a period of three years. The US Department of Agriculture and the US Agency for International Development participated with $650,000 which will be used in supporting the project through treating the cows, offering the training to the farmers, and buying the necessary vaccines under the supervision of the Faculty of Agriculture of the American University in Beirut.
The Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture had set up a project called the US-Lebanese Cooperation Project through the US loan which will take care of this project.
Meanwhile the farmers complained that the prices of the American cows exceed the prices of the cows in the local market. The Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture explained that the high prices are due to the conditions imposed by the US Department of Agriculture which forced the Lebanese government to buy the cows from specific companies in the USA. The US Embassy in Beirut denied that accusation.
