Political transformations give great importance to Moroccan elections
Morocco, Politics, 11/7/1997

The Moroccan election has taken on great significance due to the heated competition which witnesses great political upheaval.

Among the transformations that occurred in Morocco is the division of the Parliament into two chambers and application of the district system in addition to dividing the country into provinces that have extensive rights in managing the local issues. There is also a political rotation plan which aims to clear the atmosphere and prepare the Moroccan arena for transferring the government to the opposition parties.

However the failure of the opposition parties to form groups of nominees from different opposition parties might affect the competition badly especially as it foretells a confrontation between the two opposition parties: the Socialist Confederation and the Independents, which are the main allies within the opposition.

Reliable sources said that the competition in the upcoming election which is due to be held on 14 November is characterized with the heavy presence of political activities. The election is not limited to the three main coalitions; the opposition, the Middle parties, and the government, as there are a great many parties participating in elections for the first time, as they were formed recently, including the Democratic Socialist party and the Democratic Powers Front. Other parties were lately given permission to participate in the elections after a long existence, such as the Movement for Democracy and the Popular Constitutional Movement.
