Mubarak to Inaugurate Nuba Museum - with Ramses II
Egypt, History, 11/7/1997
The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his spouse will inaugurate the Nuba Museum in Aswan (in south Egypt) end of the current month in an attempt to save and preserve the human heritage in that area.
UNISCO started an international campaign to save the monuments of Nuba in the 1960's and 1970's after the Aswan Dam was heightened, which was followed by the establishment of the High Dam.
The Nuba Museum was set up on a space of 43,000 square meters. The buildings are set up on 7,000 meters which contain about 200 archeological pieces previously kept in the Egyptian Museum in Al Tahrir, Cairo, the Islamic Museum in the Bab Al Louk area, the Coptic Museum in Masr Al Qadima and the Aswan Museum, in addition to other pieces from the stores of the Faculty of Archeology. There are also 500 archeological pieces in the Museum's garden.
The museum has the statue of Ramses II, a statue of Amenbos, the wife of Amon, and the head of King Shbatka whose origins are Nubian. The Museum also contain 4 mummies of the dignitaries and clergymen kept in golden coffins in addition to Greek, Roman, Coptic and Islamic monuments.
