Defeat of female and Islamic nominees in Jordanian elections
Jordan, Politics, 11/6/1997

Jordan's Ministry of Interior announced this morning the official results of the Jordanian parliamentary elections. Sixty government nominees were elected. Eight Islamic nominees and four nominees from the leftist and national groups also won in the current election.

The only female former member of parliament failed to preserve her seat in the current election after she was defeated in Amman. The other 16 female nominees failed as well.

The total number of nominees who participated in this election was 524. The percentage of the public voting was 54.63% which is less than the percentage of voters who participated in 1989 elections which was 61.53% and the 1993 elections which was 68%. This is the third election since the beginning of the democratic march in 1979.

The Jordanian Oma Council consists of two sub councils, the parliament with 80 elected members and the Council of Dignitaries which consists of 40 members appointed by King Hussein. Observers of the election found that this election brought about a parliament with members from all persuasions, which will give King Hussein the opportunity to run the country's affairs and to continue the peace agreements with Israel after the defeat of the Islamists.

The most prominent of the losers in this election is Togan Faisal as she got 4,227 votes against 5,213 for her opponent Nayef Mowla.
